Frequently Asked Questions.

When do I need a visa?

A visa is required if there is no reciprocal agreement for visa-free entry between your home country and the destination country. The specific regulations depend on your nationality, destination, and purpose of travel. You can get a quick and reliable check from the respective embassy. Or simply check your specific case using our Quick Visa tool at the top of the page. There, you are guaranteed to receive reliable information and can embark on your journey with confidence.

Can my visa be extended?

Whether a visa can be extended depends on the regulations of the respective country, as well as the type of visa and the purpose of the stay. An extension is generally possible in many cases, but usually subject to specific conditions. Reasons for an extension may include medical emergencies, family circumstances, unforeseen events, or a continuing purpose of stay. Tourist visas often have stricter regulations; in some cases, an extension is not possible. The application for an extension should generally be submitted to the competent authority before the current visa expires. Failure to extend in time can lead to legal consequences for an unauthorized stay. The entry and residence regulations of the respective country are always decisive. Reliable information can be obtained from the competent authorities, foreign representations, or directly from us.

How much does a visa cost through your service?

The total cost for a visa consists of the official fees of the respective embassy or consulate, as well as our service fee. Government fees are determined by the destination country, purpose of travel, and processing time. Our service fees for assistance with the application process (e.g., consultation, document review, and application handling) can be found in our current price list. (if we have one, link it here) A complete overview of costs is also available upon request for your specific trip.

Do I need a visa for a layover?

Whether a visa is required for a layover depends on the specific transit country, the traveler's nationality, the duration of the stay, and whether the international transit area of the airport will be exited. In many cases, no additional visa is required, provided the transit area is not left and the onward journey occurs promptly. However, some countries, including the USA, do not have a classic international transit area. In such cases, an appropriate visa is required even for a mere layover. Since regulations vary by country, the entry and transit requirements of the respective transit country should be carefully checked before traveling. Competent embassies, consulates, or airlines can provide binding information on this, or upon request.

Further Questions.

Can I travel visa-free if I have a German residence permit?

With a German residence permit, visa-free travel to numerous countries is possible. However, whether a visa is still required for entry depends particularly on your nationality, the validity of the residence permit, and the purpose of your trip. It is also important that a German residence permit does not replace a valid passport, as many countries primarily assess entry requirements based on nationality. Within the Schengen Area, individuals with a valid German residence permit and a valid passport can generally travel visa-free for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Does my 6-month-old child also need an ESTA for entry into the USA?

Yes, children, regardless of age, require their own travel authorization for entry into the USA. For an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization), the child needs their own electronic passport. (An ESTA is NOT possible with a child's passport). The ESTA is exclusively for citizens of countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program. If there is no participation in the Visa Waiver Program, a visa is required instead.

My minor child wants to travel with relatives; is a consent form needed & what should be considered?

If a minor child travels abroad alone, with only one parent, or accompanied by other individuals, it is advisable to carry a written consent form from the legal guardians in addition to a valid identification document. This is especially true if the child and parents have different surnames. In such cases, it may be helpful to also include a copy of the child's birth certificate and copies of the identification documents of the legal guardian(s). The declaration should clearly indicate that the legal guardians consent to the international trip. This helps border and control authorities understand that there is no unauthorized abduction or child removal. It is recommended to include the following information in the consent form:

- Personal data of the minor child,
- Contact details and availability of the legal guardians,
- Details of the planned trip and itinerary,
- Details of accompanying adults, if applicable.

Whether signatures need to be notarized or officially certified, and whether German certifications are recognized in the destination country, depends on the respective entry requirements of the travel destination. Depending on the destination country, a translation of the declaration into the respective national language may also be advisable or required. In individual cases, it is also recommended to carry a translated custody decision.

I need to take medication on my international trip - what regulations should I observe?

If, for health reasons, you need to carry larger quantities of medications or drugs that fall under the Narcotics Act, it is advisable to always carry a current medical certificate. This certificate should state why carrying the medication is medically necessary. When traveling abroad, the certificate should preferably be issued in English to avoid potential queries or misunderstandings during customs checks. Further information on carrying narcotics by patients on international trips can also be found on the website of the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM).

I'm vacationing in Indonesia, is my German driver's license valid there?

A German driver's license is not recognized in Indonesia. An international driver's license is required there and must be carried along with your German driver's license. Generally, valid German driver's licenses are recognized in EU and EEA member states (the European Economic Area includes Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein). The recognition of a driver's license outside the EU or EEA depends on the international agreements of the respective countries. Whether a translation of the driver's license or an International Driver's Permit is required can be inquired at the embassy of the country you plan to visit. This applies particularly if you are relocating your residence abroad.
